Dental Marketing That Puts New Patients in the Chair

By Hitesh Lamba · Updated

The short answer

Dental marketing from Larkpin joins three things: local SEO that puts your practice in Google Maps when people search for a dentist nearby, a website built to book appointments, and AI follow-up that answers new patient and emergency calls after hours, sends recall reminders, and hands nervous patients to a real person.

  • Show up in Google Maps when patients search dentist near me
  • Answer toothache and new patient calls on nights and weekends
  • Bring overdue hygiene patients back without tying up the front desk

What does dental marketing need to do for your practice?

Good dental marketing does one job: it puts new patients in the chair and keeps existing patients on schedule.

Most practices lose patients in two places. First, the patient never finds you, because three other offices sit above you in Google Maps. Second, the patient does find you and calls during lunch, and the phone goes to voicemail. That patient does not leave a message. They call the next office on the list.

Larkpin is a local SEO, web design and AI automation agency for US local businesses. For dental offices we work on both leaks at once: local SEO and Google Business Profile work so patients find you, and automations so the call gets answered and the appointment gets kept.

When do patients look for a new dentist?

Patients look for a dentist at a handful of predictable moments, and most are urgent or tied to a date.

  • A cracked tooth or a toothache. These seem to happen at 9 pm on a Saturday. The patient searches "emergency dentist near me" and calls whoever picks up.
  • A move or a new job. A new zip code and a new insurance card send people searching for a dentist that takes their plan.
  • January. Many dental plans reset benefits with the calendar year, so new patients and postponed cleanings both pick up.
  • October through December. Patients with unused benefits try to fit in crowns and fillings before the year ends.
  • Late summer, when back-to-school checkups and sports mouthguards fill family schedules.
  • A wedding, reunion or job interview, which drives whitening, veneers and clear aligner consults.

What do dental patients search for on Google?

Patients search in plain words, with a place attached or implied. The searches that turn into booked appointments look like these:

  • "dentist near me", "dentist open Saturday", "family dentist" plus a neighborhood
  • "emergency dentist" and "tooth pain dentist open now"
  • "dentist that takes Delta Dental" (or Cigna, MetLife, or Medicaid)
  • "dental implants" plus the city, "Invisalign dentist near me", "teeth whitening"
  • "sedation dentist" and "dentist for anxious patients"

Each search needs a page to land on. A patient looking for implants wants an implants page, not your homepage. Some patients now ask ChatGPT or Gemini to suggest a dentist, so we also check whether those AI answers mention your practice.

Dental SEO: how do you rank in the Google map pack?

Dental SEO for the map pack comes down to four pieces: the right Google Business Profile categories, a page for each service, a steady flow of fresh reviews, and listings that match everywhere.

Categories. "Dentist" is the right primary category for most general practices. Add secondary categories only for services you really provide, such as "Cosmetic dentist", "Emergency dental service", "Dental implants provider" or "Teeth whitening service". A specialist, such as an orthodontist or pediatric dentist, leads with that specialty instead.

Service pages. Build one page per service you want to be found for: cleanings and exams, emergency care, implants, crowns, clear aligners, whitening, sedation, and children's dentistry if you see kids. Each page answers what happens, how long it takes, and what recovery feels like.

Reviews. Patients look at how many reviews you have and how recent they are. In BrightLocal's 2026 Local Consumer Review Survey, 47% of consumers said they will not use a business with fewer than 20 reviews, and 74% want reviews from the last three months. Three hundred reviews from 2021 and nothing since makes a busy practice look quiet.

Listings. Your name, address, phone and hours should match on Google, Apple Maps, Yelp, Healthgrades and insurance directories. Holiday hours matter most, because that is when emergencies happen.

What should a dental website include?

A dental website needs to make booking easy and earn trust fast. Most new patients arrive on a phone, sometimes with one hand on a sore jaw.

The pages that do the most work:

  • A homepage that shows where you are, which insurance you accept, and how to book, without scrolling
  • A new patient page with forms, a first-visit walkthrough and parking details
  • An emergency page that tells patients what to do right now and how to reach you after hours
  • One page for each service, written in plain English
  • A team page with real photos of your dentists and hygienists, not stock smiles
  • Online booking, or a short request form that does not ask for 15 fields

Larkpin designs dental websites that load fast on mobile, keep the phone number and booking button on every screen, and track which page each call came from.

Which AI automations help a dental practice most?

The automations that pay off for dental offices cover the moments when your front desk is closed, busy or already on the phone. These are the ones we set up most often. You can see every option on our AI automation services page.

After-hours and overflow answering

For example, a patient cracks a molar at 8:40 pm on a Friday and calls. The AI receptionist answers, says it is the practice's AI assistant, asks the triage questions your dentist wrote, and offers the first emergency slot from your live schedule. It never invents a time. Many owners keep their front desk as is and use AI only for nights, weekends and lunch. One dentist in an owners' forum said that is exactly how he uses it, and he likes it.

Text back for every missed call

When a call rings out, missed call text back sends a text within seconds. For an example practice, it might read: "Sorry we missed your call. This is Lakeside Dental. Are you a new patient or calling about an appointment?" Patients who would never leave a voicemail will often answer a text.

Booking, confirmations and reminders

Automated appointment booking and reminders confirm each visit, remind the patient the day before, and let them reschedule by text.

Recall and hygiene reminders

Patients who are overdue for a cleaning get a short, friendly text sequence with a booking link. In November, patients with open treatment plans can get a reminder that the year is ending.

Nervous patients go straight to a person

Dental fear is real, and an anxious caller does not want software. If a caller asks for a person, sounds upset or mentions being scared of the dentist, the system transfers the call during hours or books a priority callback with a note for your team.

What happens when a patient calls your office after hours?

Here is how an after-hours call works, from the patient's side:

  1. The patient calls your normal number. If nobody picks up, the AI answers after the number of rings you choose.
  2. The AI says it is the practice's AI assistant and asks how it can help.
  3. For a new patient, it collects name, phone, insurance carrier and the reason for the visit, then offers real open times.
  4. For an emergency, it follows your written emergency steps. Symptoms you mark as urgent go to the on-call dentist right away.
  5. For treatment questions, billing, or any request for a person, it takes a message and your team gets a text and a task.
  6. Your team sees a short summary of every call when they open in the morning.

How should a dental practice ask for and reply to reviews?

Ask every patient the same way, by text, an hour or two after the visit. Google's review policy says businesses must not selectively ask happy customers for reviews or pressure people to leave one while on the premises, so we send the request to everyone, after they leave.

Reply with care. A reply must never confirm that the reviewer is a patient, mention treatment, or share visit details, even when the review is unfair. In December 2022, the HHS Office for Civil Rights settled with a California dental practice over replies to online reviews that disclosed patient health information. Our review management setup drafts replies that thank the reviewer, stay general, and invite them to call the office manager. Your team approves each one.

How does Larkpin handle HIPAA in dental automation?

We design dental setups with HIPAA requirements in mind. The AI collects scheduling details and keeps clinical details out of AI conversations unless your agreements and tools cover them. We work within your practice's compliance policies, and your team decides what the AI may say. Texts go only to patients who opted in, and every message honors STOP.

Questions owners ask us

How long does dental SEO take to bring in new patients?

Dental SEO usually takes a few months to show steady results. Fixing your Google Business Profile, categories and listings can move map rankings within weeks. Competitive services such as implants take longer, often six months or more. We report progress every month in new patient calls and booked appointments, not just rankings.

Will an AI receptionist replace my front desk team?

No. Most dental offices keep their front desk exactly as it is and use the AI receptionist for after hours, weekends, lunch and the moments when every line is busy. The AI books into real openings, takes messages, and passes anything about treatment, billing or anxiety to your team.

Does the AI tell patients it is not a person?

Yes, always. The AI receptionist introduces itself as the practice's AI assistant at the start of every call, and patients can ask for a person at any time. During office hours the call transfers to your team. After hours, the AI takes a detailed message for a first-thing callback, and urgent symptoms follow the on-call steps your dentist sets.

Can the AI answer dental insurance questions?

Only the simple ones. The AI can say which plans you accept, from a list you approve. Questions about coverage, remaining benefits or estimates go to your staff as a task with the patient name and carrier filled in, so the right person calls back with a real answer.

Can you connect to our practice management software?

Often, yes. Where your practice management software allows a connection, the system reads open times and writes new appointments directly. Where it does not, appointments land in a shared calendar or as tasks your team confirms. We check this on the strategy call before building anything.
