What is answer engine optimization (AEO)?
Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the work of getting your business named inside the answer, not just listed under it. An answer engine is any tool that replies to a question directly: Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, ChatGPT search, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. When a homeowner asks "Who is a good roofer in Denver that does insurance claims?", the answer engine writes a short reply and names a few businesses. AEO is about being one of them.
For a local business, AEO is mostly about trust and clarity. The AI tool has to find your business, understand what you do and where, and see enough proof from other people to feel safe recommending you. Larkpin, a local SEO, web design and AI automation agency for US local businesses, treats AEO as one layer of local SEO, because the two share almost every signal.
What is GEO (generative engine optimization)?
GEO stands for generative engine optimization. The term comes from a 2023 research paper by Aggarwal and colleagues, later accepted to the KDD 2024 conference, which studied how content gets cited in answers written by large language models. In their tests, the researchers reported that some content changes raised visibility in AI-generated answers by up to 40%, and that what worked differed by topic.
In day-to-day use, GEO, AEO and "LLM SEO" mean nearly the same thing. People say AEO when they mean answer boxes and voice answers, GEO when they mean chatbots and AI Overviews, and LLM SEO or ChatGPT SEO when they mean one specific tool. For a local business owner, the label matters far less than the work underneath.
GEO vs AEO vs SEO: what is the difference?
SEO gets your pages ranked, AEO gets your business picked as the direct answer, and GEO gets your business cited inside an answer written by AI. They overlap a lot. Google's 2026 guide to generative AI features puts it plainly: optimizing for generative AI search "is optimizing for the search experience, and thus still SEO."
| SEO | AEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stands for | Search engine optimization | Answer engine optimization | Generative engine optimization |
| Where you show up | Blue links and the Google map pack | Featured answers, voice answers, AI answers | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini |
| What wins | Relevance, links, reviews, page quality | Clear, direct answers to real questions | Being a trusted, consistent source AI can quote |
| How success looks | Rankings, clicks, calls | Your answer or your name shown first | Your business named or linked in the AI reply |
| Main local signals | Google Business Profile, pages, listings | FAQ-style content, schema, accurate facts | Reviews, third-party mentions, consistent business details |
Our view: GEO vs SEO is a false fight. If your SEO is weak, no GEO trick will save you, because the AI tools pull from search indexes in the first place. If your SEO is strong, a handful of extra steps make you much easier to quote.
How do AI engines choose which local businesses to recommend?
AI engines pick local businesses by searching first, then writing an answer from what they find. Each tool does this a little differently, so it helps to know the basics of the big three.
Google AI Overviews and AI Mode
Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode use its core search ranking systems to pull relevant pages from the Google index. They may also use "query fan-out": the model runs several related searches at once to gather more sources. A question about a leaking water heater might fan out into searches about repair versus replacement and emergency plumbers nearby. To be shown as a supporting link, Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show in Search with a snippet. There are no extra technical requirements. Google also says keeping your Business Profile up to date can help your services show up in AI responses.
ChatGPT search
OpenAI's help center says ChatGPT search rewrites a question into one or more targeted searches and may send them to third-party search providers. For "near me" questions, ChatGPT uses your approximate location, so "good plumber near me" might become "top plumbers Tampa." To be eligible, OpenAI says a site must let its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, crawl it. Placement is not promised.
Perplexity
Perplexity says its crawler, PerplexityBot, is used to surface and link websites in Perplexity's answers, and that sites should allow it in robots.txt to appear. Perplexity shows its sources as numbered citations, so being one of the pages it reads is the whole game.
The six signals that get a local business named by AI
Across every engine, the same six signals decide whether an AI tool will mention your business. We check all six in every audit.
| Signal | What the AI tool looks for | What Larkpin does |
|---|---|---|
| Entity consistency | The same business name, phone, address or service area, categories and services everywhere | Clean up your Google Business Profile, website and listings so they match word for word |
| Reviews | Many recent, detailed reviews that mention the work and the town | Set up review requests after every job and reply to every review |
| Third-party lists | Mentions on local "best of" lists, directories, chambers, news and forums | Earn real mentions on sites people trust. No fake ones |
| Structured data | LocalBusiness and Service schema that matches the page | Add clean JSON-LD that mirrors what customers see |
| Answer-first content | Pages that answer the exact question in the first few lines | Rewrite service and city pages so each section answers one question |
| Crawler access | robots.txt and firewall settings that let search and AI crawlers in | Allow Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot, and check your hosting does not block them |
Reviews deserve a special note. According to the BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey (2026), 74% of consumers want to see reviews from the last 3 months. Fresh reviews win over customers and give AI tools current proof to draw on, so a steady flow of new reviews from our review generation and reputation system helps both.
How to rank in AI Overviews
To rank in AI Overviews, you need a page that already ranks in Google search and gives a clear, quotable answer. Google's guidance says there is no special AI file or markup to add. Here is what actually moves the needle for a local business:
- Get the page indexed and ranking for the search first. If Google cannot show a snippet of your page, AI Overviews cannot cite it.
- Check the setting in Search Console. Google's guide says a site must be included in Search generative AI features in Search Console to be eligible to appear in them, so we confirm that setting during every audit.
- Open each section with a one or two sentence answer. Then explain.
- Write what only you can write. Google's 2026 guide says unique, experienced content will likely matter more over time than any other tip, and warns against repeating what everyone else already says.
- Keep your Google Business Profile complete and current.
- Track it. Google's guide points site owners to a generative AI performance report in Search Console.
How to rank in ChatGPT and other AI chatbots
To rank in ChatGPT, start with crawler access, then build the reputation a chatbot can find. ChatGPT search pulls from web search results, so the work looks a lot like strong local SEO with a few additions:
- Allow OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and make sure your host or firewall does not block OpenAI's published IP ranges.
- Show up in the places a search for "best [service] in [city]" returns: local lists, review sites, directories and industry associations.
- Use the same business details everywhere, so the model does not mix you up with a similar name across town.
- Answer the questions customers ask, in their words, on your own site.
LLM SEO and ChatGPT SEO are not separate tricks. They are the same signals viewed through a different tool.
Does your business need an llms.txt file?
An llms.txt file is optional, and Google says it does not use it. Google's 2026 guide states that creating AI text files or other special machine-readable files "will neither harm nor help" your visibility in Google Search. Some other AI tools and agents may read the file, so we sometimes add one because it takes minutes. We never sell it as a way to rank.
The same goes for breaking pages into tiny chunks "for AI." Google's guide says there is no need to do that. Write clear pages for people, with good headings, and the engines can find the part they need.
What does Larkpin do for AI search optimization?
Larkpin's AI search optimization covers your business details, your proof and your pages, and it tracks the results every month. The work runs alongside local SEO.
- Baseline check. We ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google a fixed set of questions customers in your area ask, such as "best emergency plumber in Charlotte," and record who gets named.
- Business details cleanup. We make your name, phone, service area, categories and services match across your website, Google Business Profile and listings.
- Crawler and technical review. We check robots.txt, firewall rules, indexing and schema, then fix what is blocking or confusing the engines.
- Answer-first page rewrites. We rewrite your key service and city pages so each section answers one real question in its first lines.
- Reviews and mentions. We grow fresh reviews and earn real mentions on the local lists and directories AI tools cite.
- Monthly tracking. We rerun the same questions every month and report how often your business is named, next to calls and booked jobs.
Our founder, Hitesh Lamba, has run an SEO agency since 2013 and has watched every "new SEO" wave come and go. The ones that lasted rewarded businesses that were genuinely good and easy to understand. AI search is the same.
What answer engine optimization cannot do
Answer engine optimization cannot force an AI tool to name you. Google says indexing and serving are not promised, and OpenAI says placement in ChatGPT search is not promised either. AI answers also change between users and between days, so one screenshot proves very little.
AEO also cannot fake trust. Google's guide warns that chasing inauthentic mentions across the web is less helpful than it might seem, because Google's ranking and spam systems are built to favor real quality. Paying for fake reviews or spammy list placements is a risk to your Google Business Profile and your name. We do not do either.
