What does a web design company do for a local business?
A web design company for local businesses builds the website that turns a Google search into a phone call. That is the whole job. A pretty site that does not make the phone ring is a brochure nobody reads.
Larkpin is a local SEO, web design and AI automation agency for US local businesses. We build websites for roofers, plumbers, dentists, law firms and other local trades. Every site we build is planned around three questions. What will people search to find you? What do they need to see before they call? And what happens when they call or fill in the form?
Our founder, Hitesh Lamba, has run an SEO agency since 2013. In that time the pattern has stayed the same. The sites that bring in work are clear, fast and specific about services and towns. Some of the worst performers are the prettiest.
What must a local business website do?
A local business website must get the visitor to call, book or send a form in as few taps as possible. Everything on the page should help with that or get out of the way. Here is the short list, and why each item matters.
| The website must... | What that looks like | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Make calling easy | A tap-to-call button at the top of every page on mobile, plus a tracked number | Many local customers would rather call than type |
| Make forms short | Name, phone, what you need, where. Nothing more | Every extra field is one more reason to quit |
| Load fast | Main content visible in about 2 seconds on a phone | Slow pages lose visitors before they read a word |
| Build trust fast | Real photos, Google reviews, license numbers, years in business | Visitors check proof before they call |
| Explain each service | One page per main service, written for real searches | Each page can rank for its own jobs |
| Show where you work | Service-area pages for the towns you serve | Ranks for "service + town" searches |
| Speak to search engines | LocalBusiness and Service schema, clean titles, a sitemap | Google and AI tools read your details correctly |
| Work on phones first | Big buttons, readable text, no pop-ups blocking the page | Your customers often search from a phone, standing next to the problem |
Trust deserves extra weight. According to the BrightLocal Local Consumer Review Survey (2026), 97% of consumers read reviews for local businesses. If your reviews live only on Google and your website shows none, you are asking strangers to take your word for it.
Core Web Vitals in plain English
Core Web Vitals are three numbers Google uses to measure how a page feels to a real visitor. Google says good scores line up with what its core ranking systems seek to reward. More to the point, they decide whether a visitor waits for your page or hits the back button.
| Metric | What it measures | In plain English | Google's target |
|---|---|---|---|
| LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) | Loading speed | How long until the main thing on the page shows up | Within 2.5 seconds |
| INP (Interaction to Next Paint) | Responsiveness | How long the page takes to react when you tap a button | Under 200 milliseconds |
| CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift) | Visual stability | Whether the page jumps around while it loads | Under 0.1 |
You have probably felt a bad CLS score. You go to tap "Call now," an image loads late, the page shifts, and you tap a coupon banner instead. A bad INP feels like a menu that does nothing for a second, so you tap again. Neither shows up on a design mockup, and both cost calls.
We build to beat Google's targets, not just meet them, on a mid-range phone over a normal mobile connection. That means compressed images, very little JavaScript, no heavy page builders, and fonts that load without shifting the page.
Why service pages and service-area pages matter
Service pages and service-area pages are how a local website ranks for more than its own name. One "Services" page that lists twelve jobs cannot rank for any of them. A page about water heater replacement can rank for water heater replacement.
The same goes for towns. For example, a plumber based in Mesa who also serves Gilbert, Chandler and Tempe needs a real page for each town. Real means local detail: the neighborhoods served, the jobs that come up there, local reviews, and drive times. A page that swaps "Gilbert" for "Chandler" and changes nothing else is thin, and Google treats it that way.
On every site we build, we plan these pages from keyword research before design starts. The menu, the internal links and the page layouts follow from that plan, not the other way around. That structure is also what our local SEO services build on after launch.
Who owns the website? You do.
You own your website, your domain and your content. We say that early because many owners have been burned. They left an agency and found out the domain was registered in the agency's name, or the site was "rented" and switched off the day they stopped paying.
With Larkpin, the domain sits in your registrar account, in your name. You get admin access to the site from day one. The words, photos and design files are yours. If you ever leave, you take the whole thing with you, and we help with the handover. Your Google Business Profile, Search Console and analytics stay in your name too.
What makes a website AI-ready?
An AI-ready website is one that AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI Overviews can read, understand and quote. Most of it is good web design done carefully. Here is what we build in:
- Answer-first sections. Each section opens with a one or two sentence answer, so an AI tool can quote it without the rest of the page.
- Clean schema markup. LocalBusiness and Service schema that matches what visitors actually see, so search engines and AI tools read your business details correctly.
- Matching business details. The same name, phone number and service area as your Google Business Profile and listings.
- Open crawler access. A robots.txt that lets Google, Bing and the AI search crawlers in.
- Fast, simple code. Content that loads as real text in the page, not hidden behind scripts.
Google's own guidance says there is no special AI markup required to show up in AI Overviews. What helps is a page Google can index and understand. Our AI search optimization service picks up from there, with work on reviews, mentions and prompt tracking.
How does a Larkpin website build work?
A Larkpin website build follows the same steps every time, so you always know what comes next and what we need from you.
- Free Missed-Lead Audit. We look at your current site, rankings, reviews and how your business answers calls after hours.
- Strategy call. We agree on the services, towns and goals that matter most, and set a dated plan.
- Site plan. We map every page from keyword research: home, service pages, service-area pages, about, contact.
- Content interview and writing. A short call with you, then we write every page. You approve or edit the drafts.
- Design and build. Mobile first, with your real photos wherever possible. You review a working preview, not a static picture.
- Testing. Speed, forms, call tracking, schema, redirects from your old site, and checks on real phones.
- Launch. We go live, submit the sitemap, and watch Search Console for errors in the first weeks.
- Reporting. You see calls, form fills and where they came from, in plain English, every month.
Website development company vs DIY builder vs freelancer
A website development company, a DIY site builder and a freelancer can all produce a working website. The difference is what happens around the site: content, SEO, tracking and what you own.
| DIY site builder | Freelancer | Larkpin | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who writes the content | You | Usually you | We do, from an interview with you |
| Service and service-area pages | Up to you | Sometimes | Planned from keyword research |
| Speed and Core Web Vitals | Often heavy templates | Varies a lot | Built to beat Google's targets |
| Call and form tracking | Rarely | Rarely | Set up before launch |
| Who owns the site and domain | You, but tied to the builder | Varies | You, always |
| What happens after launch | Nothing, unless you do it | Often nothing | Monthly reporting and SEO if you want it |
DIY builders are fine for a business that just needs to exist online. If your phone depends on search, the gaps start to cost you.
Small business website design mistakes we see most
Most small business websites lose calls in the same few ways. Here are the most common:
- The phone number is in the footer and is not tap-to-call.
- The home page talks about "quality and service" and never says what you do or where.
- Forms ask for ten fields, including how you heard about us.
- Stock photos of smiling models instead of your real trucks, team and work.
- Hero sliders and videos that make the page slow on a phone.
- No reviews on the site at all.
- Forms that send leads to an inbox nobody checks after 5 p.m.
That last one hurts the most. Harvard Business Review's 2011 study "The Short Life of Online Sales Leads" found that firms contacting a lead within an hour were nearly 7 times as likely to qualify it. A great website that sends leads into a black hole is wasted work. We pair sites with missed call text back, speed-to-lead follow-up and an optional AI website chatbot so every visitor gets an answer.
Websites built for your industry
Web design services work best when the builder knows your customers. A dental patient wants to see the office and the insurance plans. A homeowner with a storm-damaged roof wants proof you handle insurance claims. We build sites for roofers, HVAC companies, plumbers, dental practices, law firms and the other trades on our industries page.
How do we measure whether a website works?
We measure a website by the calls, form fills and booked jobs it produces. Traffic is a means, not the goal. Every site launches with call tracking and form source tracking, so you can see which pages and which searches bring in real leads.
Answering matters as much as the site. The Invoca Call Conversion Benchmarks (2025) found that only 61% of callers reach a live person. If your new website doubles calls but half go to voicemail, the report will show it, and we will tell you how to fix it.
