What are Google AI Overviews?
Google AI Overviews are AI-written summaries that appear at the top of some Google search results. Google describes them as a snapshot with key information and links to dig deeper. They are built from pages in Google's search index, appear only when Google decides they add something, and can make mistakes.
You have probably seen one. Search "why is my AC blowing warm air" and, above the regular results, a box explains the common causes in a few short paragraphs. Small link cards sit beside or under the text. Those links are the pages Google used to support the answer, and they are where a business wants to be.
When did Google launch AI Overviews?
Google started rolling out AI Overviews to everyone in the US on May 14, 2024, after testing the feature in Search Labs. In October 2024, Google expanded AI Overviews to more than 100 countries and said they would reach more than 1 billion users every month.
In 2025, Google added AI Mode, a separate chat-style search for longer questions. AI Overviews and AI Mode are related, but Google says they may use different models and techniques, so the answers and links can differ.
How do AI Overviews work?
AI Overviews work by searching Google's own index, reading the best matching pages, and writing a short answer with links to the pages that back it up. Google's 2026 guide to generative AI search describes two techniques behind this.
- Retrieval. Google calls it retrieval-augmented generation, or grounding. Its core ranking systems pull relevant, up-to-date pages from the search index.
- Query fan-out. The model runs several related searches at once to gather more sources. Google's example: a question about fixing a lawn full of weeds might fan out to searches about herbicides, weed removal without chemicals and weed prevention.
- Writing. The model reads the retrieved pages and writes a summary.
- Linking. Google shows prominent links to pages that support what the summary says.
For a local example, "is a leaking water heater an emergency" might fan out to searches about water heater repair versus replacement and emergency plumbers nearby. A plumber with a clear page on that exact question has more than one way into the answer.
When do AI Overviews show up?
AI Overviews show up only when Google's systems decide generative AI will help, and Google says they often do not trigger. Its help page says they appear "when our systems determine that generative AI can be especially helpful."
Google says AI Overviews are meant to help people get the gist of a complicated topic or question more quickly. Searches that clearly want a nearby business, such as "plumber near me," often lead with the map pack instead. The two can work together. For example, a homeowner reads an AI Overview about whether a roof leak can wait, then searches for a roofer and calls one from the map.
How do AI Overviews compare with other Google results?
AI Overviews sit alongside the other ways Google answers a search. Here is how they compare.
| Feature | What it looks like | Where the content comes from |
|---|---|---|
| AI Overview | A short AI-written summary at the top, with supporting links | Pages in Google's index, found through ranking and fan-out searches |
| AI Mode | A separate chat-style search with follow-up questions | Google's index, using fan-out searches |
| Featured snippet | A quoted passage from one page | One page Google picks for the question |
| Map pack | Three local businesses on a map | Google Business Profiles |
| Regular results | A list of links | Google's index and ranking systems |
Are AI Overviews accurate?
AI Overviews are often useful, but Google itself says they can and will make mistakes. The help page tells people to click the links to check the supporting information. Searchers cannot switch AI Overviews off completely, though the Web filter shows text links only.
For a business owner, the practical risk is old or wrong facts about you, such as hours you changed last spring or a service area you dropped. Google's guide for site owners says to keep your Google Business Profile information up to date. That is the simplest way to cut down on mistakes about your business.
What do AI Overviews mean for a local business?
AI Overviews mean that more of your future customers read a summary before they choose who to call. Being one of the linked sources puts your name in front of them at the moment they are deciding.
Google says that clicks from search pages with AI Overviews are higher quality, meaning visitors tend to spend more time on the site. Google also counts AI Overview and AI Mode appearances in Search Console's Performance report under the Web search type, and its newer generative AI performance report shows how often links to your site appeared in these features.
Two things help most. Strong local SEO, because AI Overviews pull from the same ranking systems as regular search. And clear pages that answer real customer questions in their first lines. We cover the step-by-step in how to show up in Google AI Overviews.
Can you control how your site appears in AI Overviews?
Yes, site owners have a few controls, but each one also limits your visibility.
- Snippet controls. The nosnippet, data-nosnippet and max-snippet rules limit what Google shows from your pages, including in AI features. A noindex rule removes a page from Search entirely.
- Search generative AI control. In Search Console settings, you can include or exclude your site from Google's generative AI features. Including is the default.
- Google-Extended. This setting limits AI training and grounding in some of Google's other systems. Google says robots.txt rules for Googlebot, not Google-Extended, control how your site is crawled for Search, so this setting does not remove you from AI Overviews.
Most local businesses should leave these alone. The point is to be included, not hidden.
