What Is GEO (Generative Engine Optimization)?

By Hitesh Lamba · Updated

The short answer

GEO, short for generative engine optimization, is the work of making your content and your business easy for AI answer tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews to find, trust and cite. The term comes from a 2023 research paper. For a local business, GEO rests on the same groundwork as good SEO.

  • Understand how AI tools pick which businesses to name
  • Learn what the original GEO research actually tested
  • Skip the GEO myths that waste your time

What is GEO in plain English?

GEO, short for generative engine optimization, is the work of making your content and your business easy for AI answer tools such as ChatGPT, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews to find, trust and cite. The term comes from a 2023 research paper. For a local business, GEO rests on the same groundwork as good SEO.

Here is an example. A homeowner in Charlotte types into ChatGPT: "Who fixes tankless water heaters near me and can come this week?" ChatGPT runs a few searches, reads what it finds, and writes back a short answer that names three companies. GEO is the work of being one of those three.

So what is GEO not? It is not geography, and it is not a geo-targeted ad. It is also not a secret switch. Every AI tool decides for itself what to say, and your job is to make the right answer easy to find.

Where did the term GEO come from?

The term GEO comes from a research paper titled "GEO: Generative Engine Optimization," first posted to arXiv in November 2023 by Pranjal Aggarwal and five co-authors and later accepted to the KDD 2024 conference. The researchers called AI answer tools "generative engines" and asked a simple question: can a website owner change a page so that it shows up more in AI-written answers?

To test it, they built a large benchmark of real search questions across many topics, called GEO-bench. They rewrote source pages in different ways and measured how much of each page made it into the AI answer. Their headline finding: some changes raised a page's visibility in AI answers by up to 40%, and what worked best depended on the topic.

What did the GEO research actually find?

The GEO research found that adding proof (quotes, statistics and named sources) helped pages get used in AI answers, while stuffing in keywords did not. The researchers tested nine kinds of rewrites, both on their own test engine and on Perplexity.

Change tested in the GEO paper What it means on your page What the researchers found
Quotation addition Adding a relevant quote from a credible source One of the largest gains in visibility
Statistics addition Swapping vague claims for real numbers One of the largest gains in visibility
Cite sources Naming where your facts come from Strong gains, biggest for lower-ranked pages
Keyword stuffing Repeating the search phrase over and over Did worse than leaving the page alone

One result matters a lot for smaller businesses. When pages cited their sources, the page ranked fifth in the search results saw its visibility rise by 115.1%, while the top-ranked page lost ground on average. In other words, the method gave lower-ranked pages a real chance to be quoted.

Keep the limits in mind, though. These were lab tests on general questions, mostly run on the researchers' own test engine. Local questions such as "best roofer in Denver" were not the focus. The lesson we take from it is simple: write pages with real facts, real numbers and named sources, because that is what AI tools find easiest to quote.

How does GEO work for a local business?

GEO works for a local business by making sure the AI tool finds accurate, well-supported information about you when it searches. AI tools do not invent their list of businesses from thin air. They search first, then write.

Here is roughly how an AI answer about a local service gets built:

  1. A customer asks a question, such as "good emergency plumber near me."
  2. The tool turns that question into one or more searches. OpenAI's help center gives the example of "good restaurants near me" becoming "top restaurants San Francisco" based on the user's approximate location.
  3. Google calls its version "query fan-out": several related searches run at once to gather more sources.
  4. The tool pulls pages from a search index, reads them, and writes a reply with links to some of its sources.
  5. Businesses with clear, consistent details and plenty of outside proof, such as reviews and mentions on trusted local sites, are the easiest for the tool to name.

Google says its AI features rely on its core Search ranking and quality systems to retrieve pages. OpenAI says ChatGPT search works with third-party search providers. Perplexity says its crawler, PerplexityBot, is what surfaces and links websites in its answers. Different tools, same idea: if search cannot find you, the AI cannot name you.

What does GEO look like in practice?

In practice, GEO for a local business is a short list of checks layered on top of local SEO. Most of it is work a careful owner can understand and verify.

  • Let the right crawlers in. Allow Googlebot, OAI-SearchBot (ChatGPT search) and PerplexityBot in your robots.txt, and make sure your host or firewall does not block them.
  • Keep your Google Business Profile complete. Google's 2026 guide to generative AI search says Business Profiles can help your services show up in AI responses.
  • Use the same business details everywhere: name, phone, address or service area, categories and services.
  • Earn a steady flow of real reviews. A review generation system makes this a habit after every job instead of a once-a-year push.
  • Write answer-first pages. Put the direct answer in the first sentence or two under each heading.
  • Add proof. Real numbers, named sources and details from your own jobs, which is what the GEO paper found AI tools favor.

Google adds one more point worth repeating. Its guide says unique, first-hand content will likely matter more over time than any other tip. A page that explains how you handle a burst pipe at 2 a.m. in your town beats a page of generic tips every time.

Is GEO different from SEO?

GEO is mostly SEO aimed at a new kind of results page. Google's own guide says the best practices for SEO "continue to be relevant" for its AI features, and it calls tactics sold as special "AEO/GEO hacks" things you can ignore. The real differences are in how you measure success and which crawlers you allow. We break those down in GEO vs SEO: what is the difference.

Which GEO myths can you ignore?

You can ignore most of the GEO tricks sold online. Google's 2026 guide lists several by name as unnecessary for Google Search:

  • llms.txt files and other special AI files. Google Search does not use them.
  • Chopping pages into tiny "chunks" for AI. Google says its systems understand pages with several topics.
  • Rewriting everything in a special style for AI, or chasing every long-tail phrase.
  • Buying or faking mentions across blogs and forums. Google says its spam systems are built to catch this.
  • Adding special schema for AI. Structured data still helps with rich results, but no AI-only markup exists.

Some of these files may matter to other AI tools, and that can change. For now, put your effort into real reviews, real mentions and clear pages. Then see how it plays out in each tool, starting with how to get your business recommended by ChatGPT and what Google AI Overviews are.

Questions owners ask us

What does GEO stand for in marketing?

In marketing, GEO stands for generative engine optimization. It means shaping your website and online reputation so AI tools that write answers, such as ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, mention or link to you. It has nothing to do with geography or geo-targeted ads, although local businesses care about it because so many AI questions are local ones.

Is GEO the same as AEO?

Almost. AEO means answer engine optimization and is the older, wider term for any search feature that gives a direct answer, including voice answers and featured snippets. GEO is used more for answers written by large language models. In practice, the work behind both is nearly identical, and most agencies use the two terms interchangeably.

Does GEO replace SEO?

No. Google says its AI features are rooted in its core Search ranking and quality systems, so SEO best practices still apply. ChatGPT and Perplexity also run web searches and crawl sites before they answer. GEO adds a few extra checks, such as AI crawler access, on top of solid SEO. It cannot stand in for it.

How long does GEO take to work?

Technical fixes, such as letting AI crawlers into your site, can take effect within days. OpenAI says its systems adjust to a robots.txt change in about 24 hours. Getting named more often in AI answers usually takes months, because it depends on reviews, mentions and rankings that grow slowly. Track the trend over several months, not a single answer.

Can anyone guarantee my business will appear in AI answers?

No. OpenAI's help center says placement in ChatGPT search results is not promised, and Google does not promise that any page will be shown. AI answers also change from person to person and day to day. An honest GEO provider will fix the signals these tools rely on and show you the trend, not promise a spot.
